Upgrade Boulevard paving first

The Ekurhuleni Metro must urgently upgrade the pavements in the Alberton Boulevard instead of building the new ones.

Paving in the Boulevard, where most banks are situated and there is high pedestrian traffic, is completely broken, has many holes from missing covers and is extremely dangerous.

We have received lots of reports about people who have fallen into these holes and hurt themselves.

The upgrade of the Boulevard, including this paving, has been on the IDP for my ward for more than 10 years. That is why we are putting pressure on the metro to use the R500 000 earmarked for new paving to use it to upgrade the existing and dangerous paving.

Unfortunately I have received negative comments from the “implementation division” which is “not allowed to upgrade an existing pavement unless it is classified under reconstruction. Request will be forwarded to the Divisional Head who will require a motivation”.

Using this amount of money on the new unneeded paving will be tantamount to maladministration on the part of Ekurhuleni. It will also be illogical to ignore paving areas where it is dangerous for residents to walk.

The RECORD contacted the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality on September 8, but at the time of going to print no comment was forthcoming.
