Keep the Big Band sound alive

My wife and I attended a performance at the Lyric Theatre last night - At the Movies with Johannesburg Big Band .

JOHANNESBURG – There were many of us geriatrics and we thoroughly enjoyed the show. These musicians are from the upper echelon and are truly professional.

The way the music director spoke seemed to me as if they struggle to keep going and it would really be a tragedy and a cultural loss to the city if this happened.

I am not sure everybody gets to hear about the band and at the price they charge, most can afford to attend. We paid R121 per pensioner to see At the Movies with Johannesburg Big Band.

They meet one Sunday afternoon every month at 14:15 at St John’s College, St David Road, Houghton and the public are more than welcome to attend. They play and discuss music over tea and snacks. The last meeting of the year will be held on Sunday December 6.

Cost to attend these meetings is R 25 per person and R 15 for snacks. Instead of paying the entrance fee every month, people can pay R 100 per person per year (this is in lieu of the R 25 per month entrance fee) and covers entrance for 12 meetings. The snack charge still applies of R 15 per meeting attended.

I really believe that this is a heritage event that we as a city should strive to keep alive and go out of our way to do so. Tell everybody you know. It is that worthwhile!
