My home is devalued by dumping

The veld being used as a dumping site in Mayberry Park may be affecting a resident’s property value.

THE open veld next to the Mayberry Park residential area has become the place for dumping trash. I was prompted to write this letter after a property evaluator visited my property recently.

I assumed everything went well but then the evaluator asked me: “How long have you been living next to the dumping site?”

I responded that I’m not living next to a dumping site when he asked me, “What was it that I saw driving in on Potgieter Road then?” I sincerely hope that he does not take the dumping site into account when putting a value to my property.

As you travel from Alberton along Swartkoppies Road, the open veld you see at the intersection turning into Potgieter Road heading towards to Alrode or Mayberry Park, has become a wasteland with dustbin pickers and illegal dumping.

When is the municipality going to put a stop to this? We have a problem with rats coming from the open veld and the pickers’ daily dumping and sorting of plastic bottles is not helping the situation as all the rubbish still lays littered across the veld.

It appears that the Alberton Health and Safety Department and the Fire Department do not see this as a fire hazard. One day we will have a strong gust of wind and we will have a runaway fire that they cannot contain. Properties adjacent to open fields will incur damage and who will be responsible for that? When is the municipality going to do something about this?

As a Mayberry Park resident I feel that the area is being neglected even though we pay our dues to the municipality.

Unhappy Resident
