No driver’s license cards since May

I am writing you this e-mail in hopes of getting help or some action with the current fiasco the South African public is facing.

I went to renew my driver’s license card at the Alberton traffic department on May 25. I was informed that the card should take between six to eight weeks to be delivered. I went to collect the card today, only to be told that no cards have been delivered since May 2, as the company making these cards has been on strike for a few months.

I asked the lady behind the service stall what was being done about the matter and she replied that her boss phones this company from time to time, but that it really was just wasting time because due to the strike, nobody answers the phones anyway.

I asked her what we can do and she said it’s no problem, we have the piece of paper showing we have applied. I told her that it was a problem and that this is not good enough. We as the public are forced to sit or stand in cues for hours to renew these cards, and this is the outcome.

This country does not have the qualified manpower to sustain the five year driver’s license card renewal system. This is just another one of those situations where I feel helpless as I see how not only the service delivery in our country but also the entire infrastructure of our country go to the dogs.
