Budget speech brings misery to elders

Many of pensioners expressed their disappointment at Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene’s 2015/16 budget speech, by increasing our monthly pension of R1 350 by about 4.5 per cent or R60 increasing our pension R1 410.

We expected at least 7.5 per cent increase, this would have put an extra R100 in our pockets. As pensioners, we do not demand exorbitant increases to our pensions, because we realise there are about 16 million beneficiaries receiving social grants, we only ask Minister Nene to consider the high cost of living which makes it impossible for us just to stay alive.

Last year the Housing Department of the Johannesburg Municipality increased the rentals of all retirement villages in Johannesburg by a whopping 62 per cent for a single flat and 100 per cent for a double flat. This shocking news came to us without prior consultation or a warning. Because of the ever-increasing cost of living, this insensitive and cold-hearted hike in the rent makes life difficult for pensioners, who are totally dependent on their pensions. Some of our pensioners are fortunate to have their children or grandchildren to assist them financially.

We appeal to the authorities and council officials as well as Minister Nene, to show compassion and respect toward the elderly. Most of us are prepared to pay a 10 per cent from our pensions toward our monthly rentals.
