False advertising

Vodacom spends millions of rands on advertising to get a person on board and then they forget about the loyal customers they have.

On Thursday morning, December 4, I visited the Vodashop, in Alberton City, to make arrangements for my wife’s cellphone upgrade. I spoke to Mary and all details were confirmed that the upgrade is due.

She was very helpful and provided all the relevant details. As part of the advertising, the upgrade comes with a tablet. I confirmed that they have stock in the shop and that we will be back at 3:30pm.

At 3.30pm, upon our arrival at the store, the story changed. The advertised promotion that was on display in the shop and in the Vodacom brochure was not possible on the system. I insisted that the manager be called.

Michelle the manager tried to correct it on the system and then contacted Vodacom. They told her that a bulletin was sent to cancel this deal and Michelle confirmed that no such bulletin was received.

Sean from Vodacom then stated that it was a Vodacom error and that there is nothing they can do.

I spoke to Sean and asked him to get the person involved who can make the call, to override this issue. He informed me that he does not know the person’s telephone number and he will pass on the information.

Neither Michelle or Sean even attempted to offer that we do the upgrade of the phone. In the store there is a customer complaints telephone number displayed 072 337 4742.

That number does not exist nor does anybody man the complaints line. This shows the urgency that Vodacom gives to customers with complaints.

A lady phoned me this morning from Vodacom and promised to get a “higher authority” to call me, I am still waiting.

My question is simple; Do I have to cancel my contract with Vodacom and move to another service provider?
