Parents should be model spectators

I have been involved in Junior Football since 2003, with both my sons playing and loving the Game.

ALBERTON – I have witnessed my fair share of Parent Spectator Behaviour, seeing wonderfully proud moments on the side of the field, but also parents displaying horrendously disgusting behaviour.

The game is supposed to be fun for the kids. Yes, of course each team would like to win, but ultimately it’s supposed to be fun.

Disobeying the referee is a no-no, even if you disagree with his call, the fact of the matter is that he is the person in charge at that time and his ruling must be respected.

What are children being taught about authority when parents insult and abuse the authority of the referee?

Alcohol on the side of the field is not allowed, yet you will see parents trying to smuggle and hide it. This raises certain questions for me: Is an hour with no alcohol too long? Is an hour of your undivided attention for your child really too much to ask?

We need to be good role models for our children, we need to look at ourselves and ask: Is this appropriate? Am I teaching my child something good or am I creating a social misfit?
