Meyersdal building tragedy must be investigated

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng extends its condolences to the family and friends of seven construction workers killed during a building collapse in Meyersdal, Alberton, yesterday.

An urgent investigation is needed to establish the cause of the collapse which led to tragic loss of life.

I will be writing to the MEC of Human Settlements in Gauteng to request her to investigate the health and safety codes in place at the site.

In addition, the National Homebuilders Registration Council (NHBRC), an entity of the Department of Housing, must account for their oversight role on this site. The NHBRC mandate includes ā€œinsuring home owners against poor building practiceā€ and conducting ā€œquality building inspections to ensure homes are not exposed to structural failureā€.

I will request the MEC to bring NHBRC representatives before the Human Settlements Portfolio Committee to explain their actions on this particular site.

Those parties found responsible for this tragedy must be held to account. We hope that the loved ones of the victims of this collapse will be duly compensated and will find closure through a proper investigation.
