An urgent investigation is needed to establish the cause of the collapse which led to tragic loss of life.
I will be writing to the MEC of Human Settlements in Gauteng to request her to investigate the health and safety codes in place at the site.
In addition, the National Homebuilders Registration Council (NHBRC), an entity of the Department of Housing, must account for their oversight role on this site. The NHBRC mandate includes “insuring home owners against poor building practice” and conducting “quality building inspections to ensure homes are not exposed to structural failure”.
I will request the MEC to bring NHBRC representatives before the Human Settlements Portfolio Committee to explain their actions on this particular site.
Those parties found responsible for this tragedy must be held to account. We hope that the loved ones of the victims of this collapse will be duly compensated and will find closure through a proper investigation.
