The Bag Lady

The countdown is on and with only 10 weeks to go I’ll begin checking out shops for gift ideas for the whole family and for other sparkling buys.

I don’t know about you, but I’m beginning to take strain after working this year without much of a break. Don’t despair because Christmas hols are coming up and maybe you’ll be fortunate enough to be able to take a few weeks off! The countdown is on and, with only 10 weeks to go, I’ll begin checking out shops for gift ideas for the whole family and for other sparkling buys.

A few shops have already begun getting out Christmas stock, including Makro at Newmarket Mall.

Try Elia

Talking of Newmarket Mall, I’ll be honest I haven’t been shopping there very often but last week I needed to go to Volpes (since it has closed in Mall of the South) and I was pleasantly surprised. Some lovely restaurants and I particularly liked Elia which serves traditional Greek and Mediterranean food. We only popped in for a drink but ended up having a starter each which was superb. The décor is gorgeous and I loved the wooden furniture which was used throughout the restaurant. Our waiter was professional and friendly and we chatted to him about the great specials they serve. You won’t find better value for money. Phone to make a booking on 011 869 1416.

Apart from the restaurants, the mall was extremely clean, in fact I could even go as far as saying shiny and the small garden areas before you enter the mall are very pretty and well maintained.

I’ll definitely be coming back!

Calling local artists

Checkers recently commissioned four South African artists to create unique artworks to adorn the wine labels of the newest additions to its exclusive Odd Bins range, resulting in four distinct and limited edition bottles with wine labels that double as high art and complement the Odd Bins wines.

Local artists are invited to submit their designs before December 2, to be considered for the next Odd Bins Artist Collab. The winners will have their artwork featured on the labels of more than 30 000 bottles of Odd Bins, distributed nationwide, as well as receive prizes to the value of R10 000 towards further developing their talent, be it via training, art supplies or other means. Visit www.checkers.co.za for details. Terms and conditions apply.

Salad days are here again

Jazz up salad greens (lettuce, rocket and baby spinach) by adding a delicious combination of baby tomatoes, Kalamata olives, feta cheese, thinly sliced red onion, strawberries (quartered) and crispy bacon pieces. Make a salad dressing with virgin olive oil, red wine vinegar, a sprinkle of salt and pepper and whisk all together, serving separately in a small jug, so it won’t make any leftover salad limp. This salad combination is so delicious though I doubt there being any left!

That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop!
