The Bag Lady

As the weeks fly by the shops are becoming busier, don't leave your shopping until the last minute.

Two weeks to Christmas …….. and counting!

Did any of you go to the shops on Black Friday? Stupidly I went along to a Checkers at a mall and have only one word – chaos! I arrived at 07:20 to find no trollies left, nor baskets but still went into the store hoping I may be able to find a trolley or a basket at one of the checkout points. No such luck, but a customer offered me her trolley and said she would put her items in her daughter’s trolley.

It was then I realised many families had come along and each had a trolley as special items were limited to two per customer. Very clever but totally unfair! What transpired, customers pushing each other, throwing the specials across the aisles, running their trollies into other customers and total mayhem. Needless to say I valued my life far more than the specials and left the store not even managing to take my empty trolley with me.

Why management didn’t limit customers entering the store and only letting more in once some left, I don’t know. Not at all a pleasant experience and I won’t even try to take advantage of Black Friday next year.

Enough of me moaning! Now to things more festive and a few Christmas gift ideas.

I usually begin with babies and go up in age but this year I’m doing it the other way around and giving you gift ideas for moms and dads. Children next week.

Moms

Under R100

Body cream, hand cream, body wash, all of these will be appreciated by moms. How about a plant? Woolworths sells some gorgeous ones but you may find more choice which may be less expensive at your local garden nursery. A bouquet of flowers, box of chocolates, a bottle of her favourite wine, or a coffee mug filled with delicious biscuits.

Under R200

Make-up bag, silk scarf, flip-flops, slippers, wine glasses, a gift of beauty products made up at The Body Shop (Mall of the South), Yankee Candle (Mall of the South), a CD/DVD, costume jewellery, beach towel, a bottle of Amarula.

Over R400

A pair of sandals, a handbag, nightdress, perfume, silver jewellery, crystal jewellery (Crystal Creations Mall of the South), beach bag, a watch, a cookery book of her favourite cook, a magazine subscription, the list is endless.

Dads

Under R100

Bottle of wine, assorted nuts, body wash/shaving cream, chocolates.

Under R200

Toiletry bag, T-shirt, flip-flops, braai tools, CD, book or book voucher, slippers.

Over R400

Aftershave, watch, magazine subscription, gardening tools, a new braai, filter coffee plunger, bottle of whisky/brandy.

The main thing in giving gifts is really the thought, so don’t stress if funds are low. Don’t get yourself into debt – a small well-thought-of gift will mean just as much as an expensive present when given with love.

That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop.
