The Bag Lady

What's The Bag Lady been up to this last week? Read and find out!

Well, after last week’s ranting and raving about customer service, being overcharged, etc., I’ve tried to take a laid back approach to this past week. And because I’ve not done much in the way of shopping, it’s worked!

As autumn fades and winter approaches I’ve been enjoying all the trees with their golden and red leaves. My favourite is the Japanese Maple, which is beautiful, especially so at this time of the year. Our days are shortening and the dark evenings and mornings are dreadful. Getting out of bed at 05:00 is bad enough, but in the dark it’s awful. Once again I’m reminded of how I love the summer months and winter has hardly begun.

Saying that, though, there are a few good things winter brings: snug jerseys, coats, scarves and gloves; boots and thick tights; meals in the slow cooker, especially beef casserole with dumplings; delicious puddings; winter sheets; electric blankets; tea and toast for breakfast at the weekends and lying in bed on a Sunday morning reading a good book. Okay, I can manage a few months!

The good old days

A reader phoned me last week asking if I knew where she could buy a Ewbank carpet sweeper – and not the hand held battery operated one. How many of you can remember these? I’d actually forgotten about them until now and it brought back memories of my grandparents. They had one and it was always brought out when my grandfather had eaten biscuits, usually ginger nuts or cream crackers, and made crumbs on the carpet. I loved using it and the crumbs miraculously disappeared. My grandparents brought it out when there was just a bit of cleaning up to do and, for the once a week big clean, out came the vacuum cleaner. I googled Ewbank and, low and behold, found some. Amazon.co.uk are stockists, or visit www. Ewbank.co.uk.

New on the block

Kids Emporium Johannesburg South, now owned by Claire Youngman, has opened its doors in Mall of the South, upper level, opposite Woolworths. Always a favourite of mine for gorgeous baby and toddler clothing and accessories, as well as nursery furniture, educational puzzles and toys. A new product they are selling is Milk, which offers hydrating cream, bum paste, bum spray (first on the market), baby lotion, hair and body wash and milk oil. All are dermatologically tested. The bum spray is a 100 per cent natural superior product which neutralises bad and smelly odours, is anti-inflammatory, calms skin, is anti-bacterial, prevents dryness, paraben free and is a natural healer for eczema and wounds.

Lemon of the Week

Georgina, from Brackenhurst, is also complaining about being overcharged: “I bought from Clicks at Brackenhurst Square and was overcharged by R27 and my daughter went to the same Clicks the next day and was also overcharged. With everything going up we have to watch our cents and Rands, and usually it’s more than a few Rand if you are overcharged.”

That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop!
