Bridge the Gap: 67 minutes changed my life

On Mandela Day, this year, my life was changed in just 67 minutes when I witnessed the efforts of ordinary people in our community to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

Since the United Nations (UN) declared July 18 as International Nelson Mandela Day, it has become a global custom that every year, on Mandela Day, persons around the world do extraordinary things to improve the lives of others.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation started the 67 minutes campaign by asking citizens to devote 67 minutes of their time to honor the 67 years of his life, Nelson Mandela spent in the struggle for human rights and social justice. By devoting 67 minutes of their time, individuals can make a small gesture of solidarity with humanity and take a step towards a global movement for good.

Nelson Mandela once said “It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it”, and through the years

my family and I have made a difference through a variety of activities. This year, we decided to become activists and encourage others to take 67 minutes of their time to make a difference. We were able to mobilise people in Alberton and across Ekurhuleni to act and make a difference. It changed my life when persons, who had never previously supported my efforts, spontaneously joined the 67 minutes movement and offered their time and energy to make a difference and create a better world for others.

It was such a rewarding experience when community members became active and participated by putting together their own teams to collect food and blankets. I am proud to say that, throughout Alberton and Ekurhuleni, we gave out hundreds of blankets and food parcels to those members of our community that are fragile, needy, cold and hungry. I was heartbroken to see the immense need, across cultural and age groups, in our community.

Nelson Mandela was the pioneer who broke down the walls of different cultures and communities and built a nation united in its diversity. I am convinced that through giving 67 minutes we can unite our community and create a better life for all.

Let us make every day a Mandela Day and improve the lives of others.
