Living in a democratic, free and fair society has become such a luxury for most of us that we rarely take time to remember how hard we fought for our new democracy.

As a young boy growing up in Alberton, I had little if any comprehension of the challenges facing many of my fellow residents in Thokoza. Albertonians were rarely exposed to the events in Thokoza. Safe to say, it was the birth place of many great leaders of Ekurhuleni and Gauteng. During this time leaders such as Duma Nkosi, Sam Ntuli and others fought side by side to secure the future of our community.

The late Sam Ntuli paid with his life to pave the way for a future in which our community could be free and equal. This past weekend the younger brother of the late Sam Ntuli, Dumisa Ntuli, passed away in a car accident in Albertsdal. This was such a sad event, and it has brought back the memories of those great Thokoza leaders. Dumisa Ntuli was the spokesperson of the ANC in Gauteng and a resident of Thokoza.

The Ntuli family has played such a pivotal role in the community of Thokoza. With other families like the Khanyile family and Nkosi family, they were at the forefront of improving the lives of the people of Thokoza and ensuring that we achieve our vision of creating a better life for all.

Dumisa was a well-respected leader of our community and his passing is a sad loss for the people of Ekurhuleni. I have had the privilege to have personal knowledge of the great deeds Dumisa Ntuli did for our community. He was a youth activist and founder member of COSAS, always passionate about the development of the youth.

The Whip of the Ekurhuleni Finance committee Cllr Londi Nkosi regarded Dumisa as his mentor and attributes a lot of his achievements to the mentorship and support of Dumisa Ntuli. I work alongside Cllr Nkosi and was devastated when he shared the news of Dumisa Ntuli’s passing.

It is important that we remember our heroes and heroines as their actions serve to inspire a new generation of young people to achieve the same great deeds and move South Africa forward. We feel a great sense of loss and extend our collective heartfelt condolences to the Ntuli family. Hamba Gathle Dumisa Ntuli. @Neildiamond7
