Bridge the Gap: 16 Days of Activism

The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children is not just an South African event but an international campaign.

The campaign takes place every year from November 25 to December 10 and ends on International Human Rights Day.

The period includes Universal Children’s Day and World Aids Day. Every year, government, the community and business work together to broaden the impact of the campaign across the country and the world. In Ekurhuleni this is a campaign that has been localised with the theme – “Not in my name”.

This local campaign is aimed at all people that commit to take a stand and say “Not in my name will violence against women and children be permitted”. By supporting this campaign, thousands of Ekurhuleni residents will help to increase awareness of abuse and build support for victims and survivors of abuse.

Ekurhuleni runs an active 16 Days of Activism Campaign to make people aware of the negative impact of violence on women and children and to act against abuse. The political leadership is firmly committed to spearhead a coordinated effort to sustain the campaign and lead by example. Together the whole community of Ekurhuleni, can take actions to support the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign.

I would like to urge residents to support the campaign by wearing a white ribbon during the 16-day period: A white ribbon is a symbol of peace and symbolises the commitment of the wearer to never commit or condone violence against women and children. Residents can also participate in the various events and activities across Ekurhuleni in support of the 16 Days – for further detail visit www.ekurhuleni.gov.za

I urge all community members to speak out against woman and child abuse and encourage silent victims to talk about abuse and ensure that they get the help and support they need. Victims can call the Stop Gender Based Violence helpline 0800 150 150 for help.

As we move into the festive season let us celebrate not only the good over this festive season but actively campaign for the weak and the vulnerable in our society. Ekurhuleni, with our relevant partners, will coordinate comprehensive initiatives to stop the scourge of violence against women and children. Please actively participate in the 2013 campaign and e-mail me with you comments. Diamond.Neil@ekurhuleni.gov.za
