The Bag Lady

A cold spell, let’s hope it’s the last for this year and more gorgeous hot days, but still…. no rain!

So don’t forget to water your gardens, especially pot plants and hanging baskets, everyday!

Protect your face

With the hot weather come dangers from UVA and UVB rays. It’s so important to protect yourself from the sun.

Age Defence Face sun creams are extremely important. We don’t realise how harmful the sun’s rays are and you should never, ever leave the house in the morning without first applying sun cream to your face, as well as exposed parts of your body. This is even more necessary if you work outside for most of the day. A wide range of sun creams are available from Clicks, DisChem, and local pharmacies.

I went to Clicks to see what they offer and what they cost. Clicks’ own brand is actually very good and  Sun Protect SPF 50 face cream, 50 mls is R74.95.

Nivea  Sun Anti-Aging Sun Cream, 30 high SPF, 50mls for R95.95. Every Sun Anti-Aging Face Protection, 40 SPF, 50mls for R94.95.  Garnier Ambre Solaire face fluid, High 30 SPF, 50ml R83.95.

Enjoy the hot weather but take precautions and maybe stock up now with sun creams before the December holidays.

Halloween fun

I know some of you don’t agree with celebrating Halloween but if you wish to organise a party with a few creepy “things” it really can be great fun and children will enjoy it.

Woolworths has a few “sweet” treats. Creepy Crawley Giant Jelly Tarantula’s; Trick and Treat buckets filled with sweets; Bats filled with sweets; Fight Night Snakes and Eggs and if your little one has a slight accident, there’s even Boo Boos Glow in the Dark plasters!

Why not make Toffee Apples, children will love them.

Ingredients

10 dessert apples, washed and dried

10 wooden sticks (kebab sticks will do)

For the toffee:

350g soft brown sugar, 50g butter, 100g golden syrup, 1 teaspoon lemon juice and 150ml water.

Delicious toffee apples will go down a treat with the whole family.

Method

Remove the stalks from the apples and push a wooden stick into each one.

Put all the ingredients for the toffee into a heavy-based saucepan and heat gently until dissolved, stirring occasionally. Increase the heat and boil rapidly, without stirring, until the toffee mixture reaches a temperature of 145c on a sugar thermometer. Remove from the heat.

Carefully dip the apples in the toffee one at a time. Make sure that they are completely covered in the toffee, then plunge into cold water. Stand on well-oiled greaseproof paper until set.

Makes 10.
