Optim-Ed Learning Centre sends message of appreciation to two local businesses

In a heartwarming display of corporate social responsibility, two Alberton businesses have gone above and beyond to support learners with special needs.

Optim-Ed Learning Centre is a special needs school in Brackendowns to allow all learners to reach their full potential and become active members of society.

“We try to secure work experience for our older learners, by letting them to job shadow. Finding companies that will accommodate our learners is incredibly challenging,” said the principal, Bonny Botha.

Two companies in Alberton have found it in their hearts to go the extra mile to accommodate their learners.

“SPAR Brackengate welcomed our learners and let them gain valuable work experience and take on new responsibilities. They have accommodated us for years and their support has been invaluable to our learners.

“Rocky Peak Spur in Brackenhurst has been phenomenal. They treat our learners as part of their team, building their confidence and helping them to gain social skills that will benefit them throughout life.

“They even made T-shirts for our learners at their own expense to make them feel accepted.

“Not all special needs are visible and are often overlooked. Many of our learners will not have the opportunities that others may have. Being an inclusive society means including everyone, regardless of ability or difficulties.

“That is why SPAR Brackengate and Spur Rocky Peak Spur do more than just service the community; they embrace and get involved and make an enormous difference,” Botha said.
