Alberton Service Centre without hot water for almost a month

The Alberton Service Centre asks the community to lend a hand and help it financially.

The Alberton Service Centre and NPO and cornerstone of the community for over 40 years, faces a crisis.

Two boilers burst on August 20, leaving the centre without hot water for over three weeks, affecting half of the building, including four bathrooms and the kitchen.

To fix each boiler (450 litres) costs R40 000, amounting to R80 000 for both boilers without installation. The centre needs R105 000 for the total costs and has no money to fix them.

This setback has severely impacted the daily lives of the NPO’s 10 residents, most of whom are Sassa recipients. Despite their best efforts, the centre’s management is struggling to find a solution.

Established in 1980, the centre has dedicated itself to supporting elderly individuals in maintaining independent living, preventing isolation and promoting physical and mental well-being.

It has been a haven for low-income seniors, providing nutritious meals, enrichment programmes and a sense of community.

The centre’s kitchen renovations, already underway, require additional funding, compounding the challenges, so it calls on the community for help, hoping to find connections, recommendations or guidance.

As the Alberton Service Centre struggles to overcome this obstacle, its legacy of care and compassion hangs in the balance.

The residents, staff, and management count on the community’s support to ensure the centre continues its life-changing work.
