Residents take ownership of their streets
South Crest residents have taken ownership of their streets, ensuring cleanliness, working infrastructure and safety for all who reside there.
The South Crest Residents Association (SCRA) NPC is a beacon of community spirit and collective effort.
From its humble beginnings with just 10 members, it has blossomed into a robust network of over 800 individuals, all united by a shared commitment to the betterment of their neighbourhood.
The association exemplifies the power of grassroots movements, showcasing how a group of dedicated individuals can transform their environment and quality of life.
According to Deidre de Carvalho of the SCRA, their proactive approach extends beyond mere maintenance.
“We actively identify and tackle new projects, contributing financially and through volunteer work. Whether it’s cleaning, landscaping, painting, or pothole repair, the Scra members are always ready to roll up their sleeves for the good of the community,” she said.
She said the association’s collaborative relationship with the Alberton metro personnel further amplifies their effectiveness, creating a collaboration that benefits the suburb.
“The various departments of roads, electricity and water do not stand apart but work hand-in-hand with the residents, addressing issues promptly and efficiently. This spirit of co-operation has turned South Crest into a model suburb – one others might look to for inspiration,” she explained.
De Carvalho said the support of the Alberton CPF, the Special Operations Group (SOG), and CPS Security, whose regular patrols contribute to the area’s safety and security, boost the community’s vigilance.
“Local businesses, churches and NGOs have also joined these collective endeavours, playing pivotal roles in supporting the SCRA’s initiatives. A recent marathon clean-up drive, led by the altruistic members of Addicts Voice, resulted in the collection of 160 bags of waste, visibly demonstrating the impact of united community action,” she said.
She reiterated that South Crest residents have every reason to be proud, “Their suburb is a place to live and a testament to what a community can achieve when it comes together.
“Each contribution, no matter how small, weaves into the larger tapestry of their shared home, creating a vibrant, safe and welcoming environment for all. It is a narrative of empowerment, stewardship, and hope – one that continues to unfold with each passing day, every new project, and the enduring spirit of the South Crest Residents Association NPC,” she said.
