Striking structure embodies endless possibilities

When all hope seems lost, Big Ideas 3D Printing has built possibly the largest custom-made 3D plastic structure, to showcase a symbol of hope and endless possibilities.

A year ago, Big Ideas 3D Printing put Joburg South and the African continent on the map by building possibly the largest custom-made 3D plastic structure of a whale’s tail – specially coated to last for 15 to 20 years.

Now, the Alrode South company has pushed even bigger boundaries. They have created a 2.5m astronaut using 3D printing to convey positivity and cheer in the Alberton community.

The manufacturing company, which has been around since 2015, took the best part of three weeks to complete the distinct structure.

As a company, they have also built several 3D printed objects ranging from giant animals to large-scale objects.
Oliver Hay, director of Big Ideas 3D Printing, said he was fairly convinced that this was the world’s largest 3D plastic printed object.

“This is technically the world’s largest 3D-printed astronaut. The idea behind this was kind of an inspirational thing. We have a lot of children coming through to our area and we thought it would be quite a nice idea for them to have a photo with the astronaut. We hope to ignite something in a young person,” he said.

Growing up Oliver was obsessed with space. He said many children will find inspiration from this unique structure which conveys optimism.

“We have shown that it is possible to 3D print a giant astronaut, maybe someone could look at it from a similar point of view that their dreams are just as possible to reach.

“This was mainly built to bring a little buzz to the area and inspire the community. We do have a lot of foot traffic, we felt that it would be great for people to pass by and take photos,” Oliver said.

Every morning the astronaut object will be taken outside their building and allow locals to be part of this beautiful experience.

He said he also wanted to show the world what is possible with 3D printing.

“If we can instil positivity, that’s the core value for us. The fact that such a small group managed to build this, I think that’s a little badge to wear on the shoulder.

“We found the file [design] online, and most people have made little versions of them, mostly for their children. We thought it would be best if we take this thing that has been done on a small scale and go big with it. The way we made this object is such that it can easily last 50 years outside,” he explained.
