Alberton High Girls Choir shines in competition

Alberton Girls Choir will take the stage in the Con Spirito Choir national competition on August 30.

Alberton High girls choir claimed victory at the Con Spirito Choir Competition held at Leeuwenhof Akademie on August 6 and will be competing against 15 schools in the next round of the competition.

The provincial competition saw 20 schools take the stage, marking their territories.

There were 11 primary school and nine high school choirs competing.

Alberton High is among the 15 schools that will compete in the national competition at Leeuwenhof Akademie on August 30.

The school’s girls choir was an item winner and achieved 95% (A++) which is a diploma.

According to Dalshaan Hennicks, Alberton High teacher, this is the second time the school has competed since she started teaching there.

ā€œIn last year’s competition, the choir also made it to the national round with 92% which is an A++ and made it to the national round where they achieved an A++,ā€ said Hennicks.

ā€œThese kinds of competitions not only give a good name to the school but they also play a vital role in developing the learnersā€™ personal growth,ā€ she added.

ā€œThis achievement will teach them it is important to apply discipline to everything they do and not just to aim to win, but also to love what they do and enjoy it to the fullest. They learn that supporting one another is important.

This will have a positive impact and influence on their teamwork skills.

ā€œThere is a strict no-missing choir rule. We have a two-hour practice every week, and we also have at least one to two marathon practices one to twice a quarter. These marathons are usually about six hours long and we also practice the songs, notes, and movements with the girls during the school breaks.ā€

According to Hennicks, the choir has its challenges such as tiredness, emotional circumstances, and general teenage behaviour but the girls also know and understand that there is time for everything and that they can count on the teachers.

The choir’s biggest challenge is to continue participating in such competitions until they get an opportunity to compete in international competitions and to get even further in different competitions.

ā€œI honestly feel excited for the girls and am proud of their achievements. I know that they have worked very hard and I cannot wait to see how they progress in the next round and the other competitions lined up for this year and the future,ā€ said Hennicks.
