Alberton military veteran suffers from cataracts, plus delays in his pension pay out

In 1989, Beeton was awarded a certificate of recognition for commendable service in the South African army.

Meet Kevin Trevor Beeton, who is an Alberton-based South African Defense Force/SADF (precursor of the South African National Defense Force/SANDF) veteran.

Beeton suffers from cataracts and coupled with that, there are delays in his pension payout by the Department of Military Veterans.

“I don’t have medical aid, and I want to have these cataracts removed but I do not have the money to do it,” said Beeton.

He added that he has been on a waiting list for cataract surgery for the past two years at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

“I served in the army for 20 years, but I am battling to get the veteran pension. I can’t even get through to them (department). I was awarded a certificate by the chief of the army. If I could get the army pension, I may be able to have these cataracts removed but it looks like it is still going to take more time to receive the pension,” said Beeton.

The military veteran survives on the Sassa grant. Beeton is appealing to willing eye doctors to sponsor him with cataract surgery.

The Alberton Record sent an email to Lebohang Mathapa (spokesperson at the department of military veterans), to seek clarity on Beeton’s pension. The comment will be published once received.

Willing sponsors can call Beeton directly on 078 780 3625.

Beeton’s army certificate hangs on the wall of his home in Alberton.
