Capacity of sewer pipelines to be investigated

Ward 38 Clr Thavha Maifala-Masebe welcomes plans to upgrade the sewer system in Ward 38.

Ward 38 Clr Thavha Maifala-Masebe welcomes the progress report from the City of Ekurhuleni petitions office regarding a petition submitted on behalf of residents in 2020 to improve sewer infrastructure in the ward.

The petition sought to implore the CoE to allocate funds to address the sewer infrastructure challenges.

Responding to the issue raised in the petition, Maifala-Masebe said the Water and Sanitation Department indicated they appointed consultants to investigate the capacity of sewer pipelines in Brackenhurst and Brackendowns.

“Through this, the department could advise on areas which needed to be upgraded. Geranium Street in Brackenhurst and Brackendowns Sycamore Road, Bosvier Road, Marie Street, Vaal Road, and Palala Street have been identified as areas requiring upgrading,” he said.

He continued: “While the DA is pleased that the first two stages, investigation and design are now complete, and the third, design stage, expected to be completed by the end of September 2024, it is disappointing that the progress report has taken years to reach the petitioners.

“Equally, while the city has indicated R75m has been budgeted for the next three years,” stated Maifala-Masebe.
“The DA believes the city should have responded to the petition within 30 days and included the budget allocation in the response.”

He said the party would request a detailed breakdown, including design plans of the R30m budgeted for these upgrades in the current financial year.

“We remain committed to ensuring the sewer system is upgraded, and that there is an improvement in service delivery for residents of Ward 38,” Maifala-Masebe said.
