The City of Ekurhuleni’s insightful session empowers women

With women’s month in full swing, women from all walks of life converged at the Alberton Civic Centre during the Women's Directorate in the City of Ekurhuleni’s Relationship Indaba on August 7.

The City of Ekurhuleni gathered a team of professionals who took turns to offer guidance on understanding the different types of marriage contracts, the interfaces of divorce procedures and how to manage estate matters.

The city’s Relationship Indaba was aimed at providing practical support through access to financial experts and qualified lawyers.

As the day proceeded, the EMPD’s choir also entertained attendees with beautiful melodies during their performances.

According to Nomadlozi Nkosi, MMC for City Planning and Economic Development, the Relationship Indaba was not just a gathering but a celebration of the resilience and strength of women.

“It was a space where married women, divorcees, and single women alike came together to voice their experiences, support one another and gain invaluable insights.

“Our goal was to create a safe and inclusive space where women could find strength in each other’s stories, where they could connect with others who faced similar challenges. The importance of having a platform for open dialogues cannot be overstated,” said Nkosi.

One of the organisers, Mbali Malinga, said the event was hosted after seeing a need to empower women in these significant matters.

“This was a continuation of a programme that we previously held. Married women are mostly faced with a challenge where they get chased away from their homes by relatives after their husbands are deceased. At times when they go through a divorce they don’t know which door to turn to or what their rights are,” explained Malinga.
