City of Ekurhuleni addresses recent power outages

Following recent power outages, the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) says cable faults are unfortunately not easy to prevent since there is no system to detect them before they occur.

Last Wednesday, on June 26, the whole of Alberton woke up without power.

I reported it to councillor Samantha Nair and the power was restored around about 11:00 that day.

On July 1, again the whole of Alberton again woke up without power.

I reported it to Samantha Nair again and she forwarded it to the technicians.

The constant power outages are a big concern because that means that there is no maintenance done and that is why we have failures.

CoE’s response

“On June 26, we had a cable fault that affected Z9 substation, and the areas affected were Raceview, Portion of CBD, Verwoerdpark, New Market and the surroundings. Power was restored at around 10:00. On July 1, we again had a cable fault and the areas affected were New Market and Raceview,” explained Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

He said power was restored at around 11:00 on July 1.

“Unfortunately, the portion affected on July 1 was part of the area that got affected when we had an outage on June 26. Cable faults are unfortunately not easy to prevent since there is no system to detect them before they occur,” he explained.

He said the city remains committed to doing continuous maintenance as and when the need arises.
