1 dead in Alberton minibus taxi crash

Other people had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate and were rushed to multiple hospitals.

A collision between two minibus taxis at the corner of Ring Road East and Voortrekker Road, near Mall at New Market, resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries on July 2.

EMPD liaison officer Deliwe Ndlovu confirmed the fatality following the collision between the two Toyota minibus taxis this morning.

“According to one of the drivers, one minibus was coming from Ring Road East, while the other was coming from Voortrekker Road,” said Ndlovu.

It is believed that one of the drivers skipped a red traffic light, leading to the death of one female passenger.

The injured patients were rushed to different hospitals for medical attention.

Ndlovu said two patients were taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, while the others were transported to Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital and Germiston Hospital with injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

A culpable homicide case was opened at Alberton SAPS and investigations are ongoing.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
