Saying goodbye

The special and fun-filled festival will see six members hanging up their boots for good and becoming honorary members. The members are Cornelius van Wyk ‘Corra’ (current chairperson), Jason Waldeck ‘Stretch’, Jack Wagner ‘Dozi’, Ralph Kimmins ‘Flash’, Eddie du Plessis and Geoff Leite ‘Boerseun’.

More about the legends

Cornelius van Wyk ‘Corra’, the current chairperson, joined the Madalas in 2012. The fearless leader played rugby at the Alberton Club since his school days. He made a turn at Brakpan Rugby Club and the Valke U21 before returning to Alberton to play.

Corra was involved in coaching the junior’s and seniors’ rugby and later gave up coaching to rather enjoy his time as a father next to the field. He is known best for ferocious attack and unrelenting defence, his dynamic presence and leadership skills will be missed by his fellow teammates.

Jason Waldeck ‘Stretch’ started playing in the army, and made a turn in the Platteland for Lethaba, before coming back to Alberton to play rugby. After a stint in the United Kingdom, where he played for London Welsh, Stretch started playing for Alberton Madalas and has since been a legend on the field for both Golden Oldies and 10’s Rugby.

Jack Wagner ‘Dozi’ is the current treasurer for Alberton Rugby Club, as well as the Golden Lions Golden Oldies Rugby Association, and past treasurer for the Madalas. He has proved himself to be a pillar in the administration of rugby. He is also a former third-team captain and player of the year for Alberton Rugby Club. Dozi has traded his flowing locks for a more business-like look, and he will be missed for his humour and compassion.

Ralph Kimmins ‘Flash’ plied his trade in Standerton, Klerksdorp, and Kroonstad before joining the Alberton Madalas. He is known by his teammates as a fast and fearless man in tackles. Ralph is now making a name for himself on the athletics stage for over 50’s.

Eddie du Plessis’ rugby career started at Johannesburg SAPS. He raised his children at Alberton Club while joining the Alberton Madalas. This humble man always has your back on and off the field, if he is not out there catching bad guys.
