No respect for the dead at Alberton Cemetery

The grass does not get cut, some graves are no longer visible, and the weeds are overgrown.

More than five years after this publication first reported on the appalling state of the Alberton Cemetery, little has changed.

The Alberton Record was again made aware of no maintenance, overgrown weeds and water leaks at this cemetery.

Overgrown weeds aside, the water leaks have been left unattended when Rand Water just announced measures for June to maintain and save water infrastructure across parts of Gauteng.

“My dad, who passed away in 2008, is buried at the cemetery. It has progressively worsened over the years. I noticed that this year when I visited my dad on Father’s Day, the cemetery is in an appalling state,” said the source who wishes to remain anonymous.

The frustrated source added: “I did my best to clean where my dad is but am fighting a losing battle.”

There are also claims of thieves stealing metal used as decoration on tombstones and vandalism. The CoE’s Emmanuel Maphorogo, who heads cemetery maintenance, did not answer the Alberton Record’s calls or reply to the email we sent him. It was then forwarded to the city’s spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini.

The Alberton Record awaits comment and will publish it once received.
