Power returns after Mayberry Park substation blaze

The major parts of Alberton plunged into darkness after the blaze finally saw the power restored.

After a series of explosions, multiple resident groups reported a fire at the Eiger Transmission Substation in Mayberry Park on Camdeboo Street on June 26.

Donovan Scorgie, AfriForum Alberton’s head of safety management, enquired if there was a need for AfriForum’s Alberton fire team and received a positive response.

The members headed to the location provided by the advance team, who were on the scene and told them DEMS was also en route.

Two DEMS fire trucks were on the scene to deal with the fire in the station.

“Speaking with the firefighters on the scene, AfriForum asked how they could help. The firefighters asked them to try to fight the veld fire threatening the southern part of the substation because the fire had turned back towards the substation,” explained Scorgie.

The AfriForum members made their way through the bushes to an access road that led them to the veld fire.

“Following our training protocols, we started fighting the multiple fires surrounding the substation. During the process, we found the downed high voltage line that had exploded and snapped lying on the floor,” Scorgie said.

With the fires out, the DEMS firefighters checked in with the members and thanked AfriForum for their help in extinguishing the fire.
