A ruby jubilee for GW Varty

The owner of GW Varty journeys through the decades as it celebrates its 40th anniversary in Alberton

GW Varty Optometrists embark on a new decade as it celebrates its 40th anniversary in practice in Alberton.

Originally from Port Shepstone, Garth Varty started his career in Bloemfontein and after a six-year partnership with his father-in-law, Garth relocated to Alberton in 1983.

Garth’s passion is ocular health and vision care. His loyal patients, and the support of his family and friends, have ensured the growth and success of his practice. His expertise has extended his patient base greatly, whereby he is now seeing the grandchildren of his original patients.

Over the years, this proficient optometrist has earned many qualifications such as his original 1976 qualification in Johannesburg, excelling in the British College of Optometrists exam in 1992 and completing a certification of advanced study through the University of New England in Boston, USA in 1996.

“I feel privileged to celebrate our 40th anniversary, and the more I think about it, the more it rejuvenates me, because I have not lost the passion to work, and my patients repeatedly come back, valuing my work. I am not retiring soon,” said Garth.

He highlights he still enjoys being of service to the community of Alberton.

“The profession has treated me well, but more so, the community has reciprocated with their continuous loyalty,” emphasised Garth.

The support from his patients, his wonderful staff and mostly the help of his wife, Izette Varty, who comes from an optometric background, is what Garth is most grateful for.

“It has been a long journey, but I still enjoy what I am doing. I intend to carry on with the same passion in the future. I am currently treating the third generation of my original patients and have adopted a few nicknames from the children, such as Grandpa, Oom Garth and Umkulu, signifying their kind appreciation for me,” said Garth.

To continue the success of the practice Garth has kept investing in new technology and continues to invest time with his patients, ensuring they receive the best optometric care his practice can offer.
