WATCH: Scuffle breaks out in council between DA and EFF councillors

DA to lay assault charges against EFF Councillors following a scuffle in Council at the OR Tambo Government Precinct in Germiston.

A scuffle broke out at the sitting of the ordinary council meeting on November 30, where the EFF reportedly stormed the DA benches and began to push, manhandle and assault DA councillors.

It is understood that councillor Victor Lukhele was shoved to the ground, kicked and stomped.

The DA in the City of Ekurhuleni will lay charges of assault against the EFF councillors in the City of Ekurhuleni following the attack in the Germiston council chambers.

DA leader in the City of Ekurhuleni, Ald Tania Campbell, said: “The EFF speaker of the council, Nthabiseng Tshivhenga, avoided taking responsibility for what happened and failed to control the meeting. Instead, she sat idle, while her EFF thugs physically assaulted councillors.”

Once matters escalated violently, she stated that the speaker abruptly adjourned the meeting and walked out, leaving the EFF councillors to continue the assault on the DA councillors unabated.

Campbell reiterated that they cannot allow criminal acts to go unpunished.

Chief whip of the ANC, Jongizizwe Dlabathi, said that they were disappointed that the council meeting had to be adjourned.

“We’re disappointed that before the council meeting could have started, there were disruption and it continued,” he said.

Dlabathi said they are not happy that not all the provisions of the standing orders were instituted and implemented by the speaker of the council, “We agree with the spirit of the multiparty, that if there are any issues that warrant an investigation by any of the structures of the council, then such issues must be subjected into that process without necessarily disrupting the work of the council,” he said.
