South Crest community earns bragging rights

The South Crest Residents Association (SCRA), PICUP Alberton and community members collaborated and combined resources to reach out to Johannesburg Zoo and upkeep of their pump station.

The Johannesburg Zoo sent a bakkie to collect cuttings from a clean-up project held at the Zeeman pump station on November 28 in South Crest.

The trimmed thorn trees will now make a healthy snack for the zoo’s herbivores.

This is after the South Crest Residents Association (SCRA) and Project Improvement Clean-up (PICUP) Alberton and a few residents volunteered their time to clean around the pump station, following a break-in.

The community members are currently repairing it to stop culprits from breaking in.

SCRA placed a grid over the instruments to prevent theft of the pressure regulating valves, which is the cause of the burst pipes in Alberton North and South Crest.

“We had another water leak in South Crest, days after the replaced valve was stolen. The constant theft resulted in South Crest and Alberton North residents being without water. SCRA then formally adopted the pump station to be renovated and secured,” explained SCRA liaison officer Deidre de Carvalho.

She said Francois de Witt from Highway Breeze assisted in placing a spotlight and a camera facing the pump house, while Jaco Prins will also place a camera at the pump house.

“Brian Watson assisted with tree felling, while André and Natalie from Unimax assisted by sending a team to cut and clear trees.

“Wesley from Laboratory Equipment Supplies in Alberton North donated the safety grid and Johan Erke will repair the roof. Joeleen Smit from PICUP Alberton also arranged with the Johannesburg Zoo to pick up the leaves and branches to feed the zoo animals,” De Carvalho said.
