Keep city clean or pay a fine, says EMPD

The City of Ekurhuleni with the EMPD is appealing to the community to use dumping sites allocated to them by the city.

Some individuals are not in favour of utilising authorised dumping sites provided to them by the City of Ekurhuleni and this is a health hazard, stated the EMPD.

Some of the effects of illegal dumping are:

• Increase of health problems, due to air pollution around that area plus viral diseases from infected animals like rats and skunks.

• Properties around that area somehow lose value due to poor living conditions.

• Contamination of soil and water, which could lead to pollution of water resources and infertility, of the land.

• Possible natural disaster because some chemical waste can be flammable and cause forest fires.

Illegal dumping is also known as fly dumping, which can be described as unlawful dumping of any waste.

“The CoE and the EMPD are appealing to members of the public to use dumping sites allocated to them by the city, like the one situated in Alberton on Heidelburg Road, plus the one in Germiston area by Driehoek industrial site, on Johann Rissik Road,” said EMPD’s Constable Deliwe Ndlovu.

As members of the community, she said locals should keep their environment clean and safe.

“If we could try a little bit harder, including getting used to the allocated municipal controlled dumping sites. Help us as the city to stop illegal dumping by calling our Call Taking Centre on 086 453 000 and remember, a written notice amounting to R2 000 or more, depending on the area, could be issued to the person found committing such an offence,” Ndlovu said.
