Association lights up their recreational park

A joint effort led by South Crest Resident Association (SCRA) has ensured that the recreational park in Vlei Street in South Crest is lit and crime-free.

Residents using Vlei Street in South Crest will now have the comfort of being able to enjoy the park during evenings while staying safe thanks to a cost-efficient initiative to have solar lights put up at the park.

A rise in crime prompted the need for solar lights, a project which was headed by South Crest Resident Association (SCRA) and was made possible by residents’ contributions.

SCRA’s objective is to secure their immediate environment regarding security, and sustaining the most beautiful, functional, cleanest and pothole-free suburb. An initiative for South Crest residents, their services are led on a non-political functional basis with the aim of bringing back the pride of the residents.

Deidre De Carvalho of SCRA said they continue to attend to the needs of their residents.

“We have filled all potholes in the area. Our association also sent a letter to the neighbouring church not far from the park, asking them to paint their walls because of all the graffiti on them.

“We had a witch doctor living on the church land, and he was removed from the property. We are busy with a whole lot of initiatives to fix up and beautify South Crest,” she explained.

In the previous week, they then put up solar lights to light up the entire area because of a rise in crime.

“Residents were complaining that this area was very dark. because none of these street lights in Vlei Street are working, due to all the cables being stolen, We’ve noticed that a number of people are starting to use the park in the evening; a lot of people are coming out to the gym at night.

“There’s a household next to the park which has also put up a solar light and that also contributes to lighting up the street as well,” De Carvalho said.

She said the park’s clean-up was sponsored by a garden service, Peace of Mind Garden Service.

Chairperson Grobler Hennie said their focus remains – to be the neatest, cleanest and most secure neighbourhood in Alberton.

“And we also maintain our substations. They are alarmed and secured. And we can thank the assistance of the residents and the City of Ekurhuleni’s staff with specific problems related to electricity, sewage and water,” he said.

Cynthia Lok of SCRA reiterated: “We’ve got no lights in Vootrekker Street either, so this light will greatly assist the community. We also don’t allow companies to put up illegal posters everywhere because it pulls the area down. Illegal posters are taken down on a daily basis.”
