Water leak: thousands of litres lost in Alberton North

“The water department acts as if they are above the law, taking no responsibility, and acting with disrespect to citizens who pay for their services,” stated a disgruntled complainant.

In the past two weeks with the change of season, the City of Ekurhuleni has recorded an increase in emergency burst pipe requests.

This is in response to a water leak complaint which has gone on for at least three weeks at 7th Avenue, Alberton North, and which has seen thousands of litres of water wasted.

According to the complainant, no one takes accountability for ignoring this huge waste of water.

The complainant claimed that his original reference number for this specific water leak was cancelled without being attended to.

“Will there be training or disciplinary hearing for the person involved in closing a huge water leak complaint? What will be done to prevent the ignoring of this or other leaks happening again? And there is there no response from the water department regarding the reference number or complaints,” he said.

He explained that whenever you try to get hold of anyone on the respective 011 999 numbers at the water or municipal departments, you never get hold of them.

“And who prioritises which leak gets fixed in terms of urgency? I bet they cannot or will not prove they have been attending to other bigger leaks than the one I reported more than three weeks ago,” he said.

Ekurhuleni spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini said: “Please note that the city is aware of the 300mm steel pipe leaking in the area. We are trying our best to repair the leak, however, the turnaround time for repairs is taking longer than expected.”
