City of Ekurhuleni delays demolishing the Alberton CBD bus terminus

The Alberton CBD bus terminus building was supposed to be demolished by the City of Ekurhuleni no later than June of last year, but the building has still not been levelled as of this writing.

Alberton residents are still concerned about the Alberton CBD bus terminus’ delayed demolition.

The abandoned bus depot in Alberton was visited by the former mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni Tania Campbell, the former MMC of Transport Planning Alco Ngobese, and other officials on June 3 last year.

The visit was a component of Campbell’s back-to-basics strategy for providing services. The site visit also focused on monitoring the city’s infrastructure.

The building has not yet been levelled, despite the City of Ekurhuleni’s pledge to have it destroyed by the end of June that year.

With the ousting of Campbell, the Alberton Record sent various queries to the City of Ekurhuleni’s relevant departments and to date has not yet received any comment.

A resident, who had previously complained about the building and requested anonymity, said that she was delighted to learn that the building was going to be demolished since it was allegedly housing people who were potentially harmful to her safety. She uses the route near the building in the early hours of the morning and late hours of the night.

It was previously reported that internal processes were the principal reason for the delay in demolishing the terminus.

The source has again been in touch with the Alberton Record and said that it is yet another June of a different year, but nothing has been done.

“I have lost hope in the Ekurhuleni municipality. We have been promised over and over again that the matter will be resolved but to date, nothing has happened. Not only does the terminus as an abandoned building threaten our safety, but it also degrades the state of Alberton because people throw rubbish near the building,” said the person.

The Alberton Record has been forwarding multiple queries and contacting city’s officials on personal phones for a comment, however, calls remain unanswered while emails remain unattended to.

The building was initially planned to house a drive-through licencing office to reduce the workload of the Alrode Licencing Department.
