Salga Gauteng appreciates outstanding achievements in municipalities

The South African Local Government Association (Salga) Gauteng inaugural municipal audit awards recently held in Krugersdorp, recognized outstanding achievements.

The South African Local Government Association (Salga) Gauteng is thrilled to announce the successful hosting of its inaugural municipal audit awards.

This event aims to celebrate pockets of excellence within municipalities and encourage the restoration of good governance.

The awards serve as a platform to acknowledge and honour Gauteng municipalities. It appreciated those who demonstrated exemplary performance in financial management and accountability in line with the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) in the 2021/22 financial year.

The event brought together government leaders and officials, municipal representatives and stakeholders who share the common goal of promoting good governance and effective financial management in local government.

It featured attendance by the Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Parks Tau and Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, e-Government, Research and Development, Mzi Khumalo.

Salga Gauteng chairperson, Jongizizwe Dlabathi, said: “This ceremony is a platform for us to take a pause and appreciate that there are indeed pockets of excellence worthy to be celebrated amid all the gloom our sector faces.”

He highlighted as the provincial executive committee, they intend to propel improvement in the provincial audit outcomes.

“Linked to this priority is to support the drive for good governance, as well as the realisation of financially viable municipalities,” said Dlabathi.

The event served as an important platform to recognise and appreciate municipalities that have consistently adhered to good governance principles, prioritised transparency, and showcased exemplary practices.

By highlighting these success stories, Salga Gauteng stated it aims to inspire other municipalities to strive for excellence and emulate the positive practices employed by their peers.

The winners of the inaugural Municipal Audit Awards for the 2021/22 financial year are:

• Clean Audit Awards: Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and Midvaal Local Municipality

• Unqualified audit opinion with improvements: Rand West City Local Municipality

• Municipal capital grants for service delivery: Rand West City (winner), Ekurhuleni (first runner-up), City of Johannesburg (first runner-up) and Midvaal Local Municipality (second runner-up)

• Most improved record and document management: Ekurhuleni (winner), Midvaal Local Municipality (first runner-up) and Sedibeng District Municipality (second runner-up)

• Most improved leadership and governance capabilities: Rand West City Local Municipality (winner) and Lesedi Local Municipality (first runner-up)

Salga Gauteng said it would continue to advocate for and promote good governance principles, recognizing the vital role they play in ensuring efficient and effective service delivery to all residents.
