EMPD sweeps streets of Alberton

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Alberton precinct officers conducted a by-law enforcement operation in the Alberton central business district (CBD) on April 25.

The officers visited various outlets on Heidelberg Road, Van Riebeeck Road and Alberton Boulevard.

During their operation, one case of 12 cold drinks, two of 24 cases of bottled water, 15 cans of energy drink, five empty cooler boxes, ten tables, two black washing baskets, six braai stands, two kilograms of different spices, five litres of pine gel, three packs of disposable plates, one packet of disposable cups, four cooking pots, one washing basket full of bowls, 20 25 litres of bottles of water, five empty buckets, five litres of a bottle of sauce, one bottle of cooking oil, 20 handbags, four chairs and one dustbin, were confiscated and taken to Alberton pound for safekeeping.

EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa said at least 12 vagrants were removed from Van Riebeeck Road and Kiosk in the CBD by officers who also ‘cleaned’ the area.

“Three illegal structures were removed in Berra’s Street, and mechanics operating illegally on the pavement or sidewalk without the necessary documents were removed and 10 written notices were issued to the mechanics and their stock was also confiscated,” she said.

The EMPD urges all budding entrepreneurs to apply for trading permits at their nearest Customer Care Centre to avoid being on the wrong side of the law.
