Test results prove Ekurhuleni tap water safe to use

After three positive cases of cholera in the metro of Ekurhuleni, the city assures residents that, after conducting tests, the water is safe to use.

The City of Ekurhuleni reassured the public that their drinking water is of the highest quality and safe to use.

The reassurance was in response to the false claims on social media platforms that the city’s tap water was contaminated with the bacterium that causes cholera. The social media posts came after three cholera cases in the city were confirmed.

According to the city’s spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, following these cholera cases, the tap water underwent emergency testing by environmental health professionals to see if this might have been the cause. The findings were negative, indicating that the water is safe to drink.

“It is also important to note that the city continuously samples and analyses its tap water at various sampling points to confirm compliance with the South African National Standard for Drinking Water SANS 241.

“These sampling points range from direct connections, taps, reservoirs, distribution network points, clinics, water tanker trucks and end-of-the-network user points. The sampling intervals range from daily, weekly, and monthly whereby the city confirms that the water is clean, safe to drink and for general use,” Dlamini explained.

He said this is done to guarantee that the water delivered to communities is high quality and complies with national requirements.

Residents should contact the city through their local customer care centre if they are concerned that the quality of the water is compromised.
