Rainy weather conditions affect city’s waste removal

Rainy weather causes Ekurhuleni's waste backlogs which was already an issue for the citizen of Ekurhuleni.

The continuing rains have made the disposal sites muddy, which is slowing down the turnaround time for waste management services.

Spokesperson of the City of Ekurhuleni, Zweli Dlamini, said that due to the time it takes to navigate around the waste sites, city vehicles and those of service providers have recently started taking longer to complete their rounds.

This development has negatively impacted the already strained waste removal service in the city.

“The Simmer and Jack, and Platkop landfill sites are the hardest hit. What is even worse is that quite a number of our vehicles use these facilities. Affected areas include Thembisa, Edenvale, Kempton Park, Germiston, Alberton and Boksburg,” Zweli explained.

Zweli promised that despite the difficulties, the city will continue to provide the regular round pickups, and in some places, they may have missed on a specific day, the backlog will most likely be resolved in a day or two.

“In the meantime, as the rain persists, trucks may use the Rietfontein landfill site as an offloading zone to ease the pressure,” Zweli concluded.
