New wheels enhance services at Alberton Child Welfare

Thanks to the support received from donors and sponsors, Alberton Child Welfare recently received two new vehicles which will greatly improve their much-needed services.

Alberton Child Welfare began the year on a good note after receiving new wheels that will greatly enhance services offered to the greater Alberton areas.

The two new vehicles – a Suzuki S-Presso worth R158 000 each – were delivered at the Alberton North organisation on January 10.

These vehicles, purchased at Suzuki Bassonia, will ensure that smoother service delivery is carried out and will improve the lives of those in need of care, especially children.

Anubha Mackerdhuj, director at Alberton Child Welfare, extended her gratitude to their donors and sponsors and the board of management for these new wheels.

Eugene Jacob (treasurer) hands over the new wheels to Anubha Mackerdhuj (director).

“Our board managed to fundraise the funds, which will then be utilised for the purchase of the vehicles. Over the past two years, the organisation has been experiencing difficulties in ensuring service delivery to communities, especially the marginalised,” she said.

According to Mackerdhuj, it became difficult for staff to investigate allegations of abuse, neglect and abandonment and to undertake the processes associated with the placement of children.

“Without these vehicles, our workers were unable to investigate the care of children and to take children to the hospital. We were unable to do the necessary screening required of us in placements and could not go to court to deal with some cases,” she explained.

She said the vehicles came at a time when they were needed most.

“During the past two months, the Department of Social Development helped us with transportation. Workers also made an effort to ensure that services continued by using their own vehicles,” she said.
