MMC restores transfer station to original state

MMC for Environment and Waste Management André du Plessis has confirmed they are on their way to having the transfer station back to normal functionality.

The MMC for Environment and Waste Management André du Plessis is resolute on resolving Heidelberg Road Transfer Station grievances head-on.

In under a week, amid his visit to the transfer station, there have been massive improvements on the unpleasant state of the station.

This follows various complaints to the office of the mayor about the deteriorating state of the station, including other related service delivery issues.

Since his visit alongside divisional heads, Ivan Naidoo, Ward 106 committee members and the EMPD, security has been beefed up. According to du Plessis, they had three TLB machines and six tipper trucks working constantly this past week.

TLB machines are seen at the transfer station.

He said restoring the transfer station will most likely be done by the end of the following week.

“We are also erecting a fence on both sides of the entrance road, leading off from Heidelberg main road to the entrance of the transfer station. This area is also cleaned and will be monitored by security to prevent the harassment of residents who are using this facility,” said du Plessis.

Security is also increased to prevent perimeter infiltration by illegal waste pickers who damage perimeter fences for illegal access to the site.

In the long term, the MMC said they are investigating the possibility of installing solar panels to the existing large compactor facility to get it functional again.

He confirmed the current electrical cabling to this facility is constantly stolen before it enters the site. Better management is also initiated, together with more regular site visits.

Du Plessis previously said they welcomed the participation from the private sector in patrolling at the station following Ward 106’s commitment to engage with local securities to come on board.
