Alberton High cyclist attains accolade for accomplishment

Matthew Lester recently received the highest accolade of recognition for excellence in sport.

Congratulations are in order for Alberton High School’s Matthew Lester who recently achieved a white blazer.

After being selected to represent South Africa for the Junior Continental Track Championships in Nigeria, the Grade 12 learner cycled home with two gold medals.

He was announced by school principal Jannie Olivier as receiving his national colours, awarded by the school for his achievements.

Lester was fittingly awarded a white blazer, the school’s highest honour that is presented to a learner.

His grandfather, Matt Minnie, also a former headmaster at the school, was on hand to present the well-deserved prestigious honour.

Lester has also been selected to represent SA at the World Junior Track Cycling Championships in Israel from August 23 to 27, this time for three sprint events.

His mother, Annemie Lester, said this will be a moment in their lives they will cherish forever.

“No words can describe how proud I felt at that moment. It made me realize what Matthew has accomplished in such a short space of time and how talented my son is. And what made the moment even more special was the fact my dad, Mr Minnie was invited to present the jacket to my son,” she said.
