City implements plan to end uncontrolled illegal dumping

The city intends to meet with ward councillors and concerned residents to work on a plan to decommission (close) the site and identify alternative use of the site.

Continuous uncontrolled illegal dumping on the side of the road of JG Strydom along Delphinium street in Ward 94 may be a thing of the past as the City of Ekurhuleni proposes a plan.

The illegal dumping which has plagued residents in the surrounding areas for years devalues the area and causes environmental contamination.

The bulk of waste, rubble and litter are some of the things illegally dumped on the open field.

The market potential value of properties in the area is reportedly being severely prejudiced by the heavy illegal dumping.

This issue emerged after a waste transfer station in Hennie Alberts Street was closed on July 8, 2008, by an order of the court. Affected residents confirmed that the closure led to illegal dumping in the open field, bringing criminal elements to surrounding areas.

The city’s spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini said court order was issued to close the site because of public apathy from the nearby community.

“The transfer station was licensed by the Gauteng Competent Authority. The Department of Environmental Resource and Waste Management has over the years been cleaning and removing illegal dumping in this area.

This includes conducting by-law blitzes to curb the negative impact of illegal dumping at the area,” he said.

He reiterated that the city intends meeting with ward councillors and residents to work on a plan to decommission the site and identify alternative use for the site.
