EMPD observes Mandela Day by enforcing by-laws

Non-compliant vendors were visited during an operation as part of the EMPD’s 67 minutes for Mandela Day.

The EMPD By-Laws Unit officers and the Alberton precinct traffic wardens joined forces on July 17 and 18.

They conducted an operation where they confiscated perishables and kitchen accessories and recognised the 67 minutes for Mandela Day.

They enforced the municipal by-laws on Garfield Road, Chris and Piet Fick streets, Heidelburg Road and Dekenah Street for non-compliant traders. Before the operation, the traders received notification, were workshopped and advised.

The value of the confiscated goods is R3 420.

“During the action, a bucket full of marinating sauces, four braai stands, 21 pots, two frying pans, four steel tables, 37 plastic chairs, six buckets, a blue water dispenser, three packs of take away plastic bags, three buckets of cookies, a case of cool drinks, 24 energy drinks, four Ekurhuleni wheelie bins, two bowls of salads, and two blue tents were confiscated,” said EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa.

Three cooler boxes, a 5L cooking oil, one charcoal bag, a box of fruits with snacks and bananas, two boxes of bananas and apples and a box of peanuts with biscuits were also impounded and taken for safekeeping.

Thepa said members issued an appropriate written notice to a registered trader for spillage on the corner of Dekenah Street and Heidelburg Road.

She said this was an ongoing operation, especially for non-compliant traders in Ekurhuleni.

“Meanwhile, on the 18th, the EMPD Alberton precinct traffic wardens in their overalls, roped in a few recyclers, who normally sit by the main entrance of the dumping site, situated on Heidelburg Road between Dekenah Street and the arch bridges. The main entrance was swept clean as the 67 minutes contribution and celebration of the late icon and legend, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela,” Thepa said.
