Zizi Kodwa, accused of breaking the law, is now a lawmaker

Kodwa stands accused of accepting direct payments and luxury accommodation totalling R1.6m from businessman Jehan Mackay. Kodwa and Mackay face corruption charges.

Corruption-accused Zizi Kodwa has been sworn in as a member of parliament. Kodwa was forced to resign as SA’s sports minister after the National Prosecuting Authority charged him with corruption.

The State claims that “He (Kodwa) received direct payments and luxury accommodation worth over R1.6m paid by and/or facilitated by Mackay as gratifications for his interventions in government procurement processes to advance the interests of Mackay, TSS and EOH”.

The charges against Kodwa stem from evidence the State Capture Commission uncovered, recommending he be investigated for possible corruption. Kodwa denies the charges.

Despite this, Kodwa took the oath of office in parliament and swore allegiance to SA, upholding and respecting the country’s laws. Parliament’s role is to make laws that improve citizens’ lives and discuss and debate government policy and other political matters.
