9 accused in Meyersdal multimillion-rand drug lab bust remain in custody

Law enforcement agencies executed a search warrant on the premises and found large quantities of chemicals used to make drugs, drug manufacturing equipment and actual drugs.

The nine people running a drug lab who were arrested at a house in Meyersdal have been remanded back into custody. The case was heard at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on June 10.

The case was postponed to July 4, when the accused are expected to file for a formal bail application, while the investigating officer in the case verifies the residential addresses of the accused and the citizenship status of some of those caught at the alleged drug lab operating at the Meyersdal property.

The accused face charges of dealing drugs, violating the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act, and the possible violation of South Africa’s immigration laws.

The accused names are Francois Marais (31), Victor van Schalkwyk (18), Charl Redelingshuis (26), Thomas John (39), Sibusibo Masemola (39), Billy Mokareka (25) Madelen Cheza (35), Jayson Van Der Heever (21), and Albertus Markus Marais (25)

On June 7, members of the Johannesburg K9 Unit and National Counter Narcotics, executed a search warrant on a house in Meyersdal, after receiving information about a suspected drug lab operating on the property.

During a search of the property, police found large quantities of chemicals used to manufacture drugs, drug manufacturing equipment and actual drugs. The drug lab is reportedly worth millions of rands.
