WATCH: Residents loot cash-in-transit van after heist in Roodekop

A video showing members of a community working together to get money from the cash in transit van has gone viral on social media.

A cash-in-transit van was bombed this afternoon on the R554/Heidelberg Road underneath the N3 bridge.

It is believed the suspects managed to flee with an undisclosed amount of money after using explosives to access the cash.

Dozens of people rushed to the scene, scrambling for leftover money scattered all over Heidelberg  Road after the explosion.

The intersection was closed for police to conclude their examination of the scene.

The South African Police Service(SAPS) wishes to send out a stern warning to community members that looting at cash-in-transit crime scenes is a crime.

“Cash-In-Transit (CIT) heist crime scenes can often be very dangerous particularly when explosives are used in such robberies.”

Furthermore, when a robbery is committed, the area now becomes a crime scene and those looting at such crime scenes often contaminate the scene which will constitute a crime of theft as well as defeating the ends of justice.

SAPS advices the community that when a crime is committed, it is the responsibility of the community to report the incident to the police by immediately calling the Crime Stop Number on 086 00 10111 and/or to report the matter to their nearest police station.

An update will follow as soon as more information becomes available.
