Karin Blignaut pleads not guilty

Karin Blignaut’s defence informed the court of their intention to bring an application in terms of Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Act, during her recent appearance.

CEO of Tame Communications [Tame Times], Karin Blignaut, reappeared before the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on January 19 and 20, where she made her plea of not guilty.

Blignaut stands accused of defeating or obstructing the administration of justice and submitting a false statement in an affidavit.

In a separate matter heard before the South Gauteng High Court, where an interdict application was brought against the complainant, Rynette Farrar, documents presented to the court as well as the said [supplementary affidavit] was used.

Addressing the court, Farrar alleged that Blignaut made a ‘false affidavit’ against her in December 2013. However, the accused has since pleaded not guilty to the two counts that she is charged with.

The State has closed its case after four of its witnesses testified before the court on both days in lengthy proceedings which also included cross-examinations. The matter saw another postponement to February 24 and is still on the roll.

Blignaut’s defence informed the court about their intention to bring an application in terms of Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Act, which stipulates;

“If, at the close of the case for the prosecution at any trial, the court is of the opinion that there is no evidence that the accused committed the offence referred to in the charge or any offence of which he/she may be convicted on the charge, it may return a verdict of not guilty.”
