WATCH: Viral video sparks investigation into alleged President High School bunking

The recent viral video depicting learners allegedly bunking class at Hoƫrskool President High School has sparked concern and prompted swift action from both the school and the Gauteng Department of Education.

A video surfaced on social media, capturing a group of learners from Hoƫrskool President High School in Ridgeway, allegedly bunking class.

The incident has raised concerns within the community, prompting swift action from both the school and the Gauteng Department of Education.

The MEC Matome Chiloane said the matter came to light after a concerned resident in Lion Ridge Complex reported witnessing learners from President High School at a residence in the complex during school hours.

ā€œFollowing this report, officials from the school promptly visited the complex, only to be informed by security personnel that Mondeor Police had already intervened and collected the learners.

ā€œWe have taken this incident seriously and have initiated an investigation in collaboration with the school. This investigation will be instrumental in conducting a necessary disciplinary hearing against all affected learners, following established policies,ā€ the MEC said.

Chiloane expressed her disappointment at the behaviour captured in the video and emphasised the importance of maintaining discipline and upholding school rules. He stressed the need for learners to be mindful of their actions, as negative behaviour can have long-lasting implications for their future.

ā€œThe department is committed to addressing this issue and implementing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future,ā€ said Chiloane.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, provincial police spokesperson, bunking class is not considered a criminal offence, and therefore, formal police investigations are not currently underway.

ā€œThis incident highlights the broader issue of student attendance and the need for schools, parents, and the community to work together in ensuring that learners are attending classes regularly,ā€ said Chiloane.
