Action plan against emergence of informal settlement on Swartkoppies site

Residents of Kibler Park and surrounding areas came together to formulate an action plan against the emergence of theĀ informal settlement.

An urgent meeting was called on the evening of October 4 with the residents of Ward 125 and surrounding areas.

The agenda of the meeting was to bring to the attention of the community the sudden emergence of informal settlement in Swartkoppies by the City of Johannesburg on Thursday, October 5 and to formulate a plan of action.

It is alleged that CoJ was handed a court order to find Temporary Emergency Accommodation (TEA) for the people who previously occupied the current burnt building in Marshalltown.

During the meeting, community members voiced their concerns about their safety as they do not know the history of these occupants and the strain the informal settlement will have on the infrastructure and basic services such as water and electricity.

The director of the Department of Human Settlements stated: “Because the burnt building in Marshalltown is condemned, COJ had been instructed to find a safe place for the people and have chosen this specific land. However, the MMC of Human Settlement has not sanctioned this.”

The residents of Ward 125 and surrounding areas have taken a decision to pursue legal measures by appealing the court order and are set to protest on the site to prevent the emergence of the informal settlement as a plan of action.
